چکیده

Optical transfer function (OTF) and image spectrums of the layered metal (M)–dielectric (D) superlenses (MD)n (where n is the number of cycles) are analyzed via transfer matrix method and effective-medium model. It is shown that the magnitude of OTF (MTF) with a high cutoff wave vector does not guarantee high resolution; the fluctuation of phase of OTF (PTF) is also a prime factor causing superlens imaging distortion. When the layered metal–dielectric superlenses have a small number of cycles, we find that the different types of superlenses (such as (MD)nM, (MD)n, and (DM)nD) with the same effective permittivity have totally different performances; the superlens with (DM)nD arrangement has the best performance; this will be valuable for designing layered metal–dielectric superlenses with less cycles. & 2009 Elsevier GmbH. Imaging properties of a metamaterial superlens

The subwavelength imaging quality of a metamaterial superlens is studied numerically in the wave vector domain. Examples of image compression and magnification are given and resolution limits are discussed. A minimal resolution of l/6 is obtained using a 36 nm silver film at 364 nm wavelength. Simulation also reveals that the power flux is no longer a good measure to determine the focal plane o...

Separation of Granularity into Uniformity Deterioration Factors for Electrophotographic Images

It is important to not only evaluate granularity but also clarify the factors affecting it in order to improve the graininess of an image. A method for separating graininess into elements on the basis of the fluctuation of the background, lightness, and toner adherent area is proposed. By using this method following estimations will be enabled; 1. By obtaining the relation between the ordinary ...

Removal of FEG Fluctuations in STEM Imaging

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images often show intensity noise due to emission fluctuation. This type of image noise often happens with field emission guns (FEG) and we may call it FEG noises. The FEG noise can become readily noticeable for a certain high intensity STEM images and usually deteriorate image quality. Fig. 1A shows an annular dark field (ADF) STEM image, where ...

Sub-diffraction-limited optical imaging with a silver superlens.

Recent theory has predicted a superlens that is capable of producing sub-diffraction-limited images. This superlens would allow the recovery of evanescent waves in an image via the excitation of surface plasmons. Using silver as a natural optical superlens, we demonstrated sub-diffraction-limited imaging with 60-nanometer half-pitch resolution, or one-sixth of the illumination wavelength. By pr...

Phase compensating effect in left-handed materials

Based on the difference between negative refraction and negative refractive index, the phase compensating effect was proposed to distinguish negative refraction in left-handed materials (LHMs) and photonic crystals (PCs). With this effect, perfect lens (PL) of LHM in which both propagating and evanescent waves contribute to the image could be well understood, which is differed from superlens ma...
